Fundamentals of Family Medicine, Third Edition, describes the current approach to common problems in family practice. The book tells how family physicians provide high-quality, comprehensive, and ongoing health care for patients and families, based on current evidence and time-tested methods in clinical practice.

Clinical scenarios that include case studies and questions for group discussion reinforce the book's clinical topics. The clinical scenarios all concern members of the Nelson family- a multigenerational extended family whose members visit the family physician with a variety of health concerns and whose dynamics evolve from chapter to chapter. Purpose: The book is written as a single-source guide for students performing a family practice clerkship during the undergraduate medical school curriculum. Given the unfortunately short duration of many such clerkships at many U.S. medical schools, such a comprehensive yet concise work is greatly appreciated.
Audience: Although written primarily for medical school level clerks, the book is also useful for residents outside the specialty (psychiatry, obstetrics, etc.) who may rotate through a family practice service as interns. The editor is one of the foremost family medicine educators in the country, and he has once again assembled an impressive array of chapter authors.
Features: The book covers the basic elements of the discipline of family practice at a level that medical students will find readable and interesting. In addition to the "nuts and bolts" clinical information, there is a case study after each chapter. The cases throughout the book all involve the same extended family, lending a unique degree of comprehensiveness to the book's approach. Graphs and tables are timely and well-done.
Assessment: This remains the best single "rotation-sized" book for clinical clerks in family practice. This is the first edition of an abbreviated version of a larger textbook by the same authors, this one designed for use by third-year medical students. It is a soft-cover book containing 26 chapters written by 43 authors, all family physicians. The purpose is to serve as a text for medical students taking a family medicine clerkship by describing problems commonly seen by family physicians and the process they use to manage a diverse assortment of illnesses in a time-limited fashion. The book focuses on the process by which family physicians provide high-quality, comprehensive, and continuing care to patients and their families. The book is intended for medical students enrolled in family medicine or primary care clerkships. These are usually third-year students. The chapters represent a broad spectrum of clinical problems seen in primary care. A case presentation and questions follow each chapter, intended to be the basis for small group discussions. The cases are all members of one extended family, the Nelsons, and focus on the importance of continuity of care and the effects of illness on various family members. This book serves as a useful text for third-year medical students taking a family medicine clerkship. It is less pensive than the parent textbook and has been modified appropriately to help students understand the fundamentals of family medicine. Only one of the four associate editors contributed a chapter. Most of the references are relatively old, with few being more recent than 1991 except for the chapter written by the editor.
