About the Author

Mike Jackson

Mike Jackson grew up in Tipp City, Ohio, and graduated from Ohio University with a B.S.Ed. in 1968. He entered the United States Air Force in 1968, earned his pilot wings, and flew fighter, observation, bomber, and training aircraft in addition to serving in a number of command positions, retiring as a lieutenant colonel and command pilot. He flew 210 combat missions in Vietnam, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart, nine Air Medals, and numerous other decorations.
Following his 23-year Air Force career, Mike served thirteen years as the Executive Director of the National Aviation Hall of Fame at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. He was named Executive Director Emeritus upon his departure to become the National Chairman of Operation Welcome Home in 2005.

Karen Jackson

Karen graduated from Brooklyn High School near Cleveland before attending Ohio University where she met Mike. After earning her B.S.Ed. degree in elementary education, Karen and Mike married and moved to Texas the very next day. They have been married for 52 years.
As Karen moved around the country with Mike, she taught in six school districts in three states, including South Carolina, Texas, and Ohio. She earned her M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from Texas Tech University, where she worked as a research assistant and taught education methods courses for a brief period before moving again.
Following her move to Tipp City in 1989, Karen taught sixth grade in Tipp City for 22 years, specializing in English Language Arts. In 2005, she earned National Board Certification in Early Adolescent Language Arts, and she retired from classroom teaching in 2011.
In the fall of 2012, Karen became a University Supervisor for the College of Education at Wright State University, a position which she held for seven years. As such, she supervised teaching candidates who were completing various phases of field experience and student teaching in public schools.
