Landsman (history, State U. of New York-Stony Brook) examines the submerged changes in British American colonial culture during a period in which history textbooks can find few actual events to report. He explains the shift in self-identity from exiles in a remote and isolated outpost of Europe to citizens of Britain. He cites the extension of the press and the world of books, pamphlets, and reading; the advent of evangelical religion; the dissemination of the Enlightenment; and the adoption of the rhetoric of British liberty and claims of rights, which led to trouble not far down the road.
