Friend of Animals The Story of Henry Bergh
Friend of Animals is the story of Henry Bergh, the man who founded the animal and child welfare movements in America. Today it is difficult to believe that organizations for the protection of children and animals did not always exist. Until 1866, however, there was not a single organization for this purpose. Both animals and children were considered private property. The owner of a horse or dog or any other animal could treat it as he saw fit. Fathers, mothers or guardians could treat a child badly with no fear of legal intervention. If people chose to mistreat their animals or their children, no one could legally interfere. On April 19, 1866, this changed, for on that day the first really effective law against cruelty was passed by the New York State Legislature, a law to protect animals from suffering. Three days later the first organization to enforce this law came into being, it was The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Eight years later, in 1874, the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was organized. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and our current child welfare system are the result of Henry Berghs efforts to protect animals and children from mistreatment and abuse. Roger A. Caras, former President of The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals wrote this. Outlawing cruelty to animals and protecting helpless children are both important chapters in our history. Getting laws passed and organizing societies to enforce the laws was a beginning. These actions helped, but they were not enough. In addition, it took a man of courage, a man who could and would fight for what he knew was right. That is what Mildred Mastin Paces book is about, the story of Henry Berghs crusade to protect animals and children from mistreatment and abuse. I am confident that people who read Friend of Animals will appreciate Henry Berghs accomplishments and realize his impact on the humane movement. Certainly, all of us here at the ASPCA take pride in his work and honor the memory of a pioneer in the animal welfare world. A portion of the sales of this e-book will be donated to the ASPCA.
