About the Author

Rebecca Adams’s father was a pastor in the church, yet he inflicted abuse on their household.
Her parents divorced, but her new stepfather was extremely oppressive. Rebecca’s “escape”
finally came when her boyfriend proposed and she said yes. Unexpectedly, her new husband
turned out to be a different person than he had pretended to be during their courtship. Over
the following twenty years, his mental, financial, sexual, and spiritual abuse increased in
frequency and intensity. Finally, it became apparent to Rebecca that her only choice was to
flee, and with the encouragement of their three children, she did so. Rebecca now welcomes
the opportunity to speak to church and civic groups regarding domestic violence.
