About the Author

About The Author
Frederick Douglass was one of the original and most influential African American leaders, abolitionists, speakers, writers, and statesman of all time. He is perhaps remembered best for composing his own autobiographical stories, including this narrative. Born into slavery, Douglass learned to read and write as a young boy. He eventually escaped from slavery and went to New York City. He was such an impressive orator that numerous persons doubted if he had ever been a slave. After the Civil War he was active in securing and protecting the rights of freemen. In his later years he filled a variety of important public leadership and diplomatic roles. His other autobiographical works include My Bondage and My Freedom and Life and Times of Frederick Douglass.
