Description: This is a memory aid for physicians in training to remember the differential diagnoses associated with medical conditions.
Purpose: The author relates the difficulty students and residents had during the morning report while in training when they were asked to consider questions of what else could this be. This book presents a framework for how to consider the other conditions in the differential diagnosis. As this exercise is a step beyond the usual history and physical examination, it is a very necessary step in training programs.
Audience: The audience is those in training programs, but the book also serves as a reference for experienced clinicians who may find themselves considering a difficult atypical set of symptoms and wish they had a memory aid to help them expand the differential options.
Features: The print version is divided into the traditional organ systems. Each chapter is divided into topics such as bradycardia, heart failure with preserved ventricular systolic function, primary hypothyroidism. These sections are presented in a question-and-answer format based on the framework for the topic and start with an illustrative case history. In many areas the framework is broken into its individual segments with an explanation of how the physiology defines the framework. There are a number of relevant figures, black-and-white photographs and drawings, key points to remember, and references.
Assessment: As a memory aid that breaks down the components of the differential diagnosis for physicians in training, this is very useful as it focuses on why and how the pieces of the puzzle fit together. It is one of the few books that addresses the differential diagnosis concept and for that reason is a valuable addition to a resident training program.
