Overview

Four by Four, Vol. 3 collects four songs each by girl group titans the Cookies, Little Eva, the Dixie Cups, and the Shangri-Las. The format is interesting because it gives listeners more chance to discover the groups involved than a collection with only one song per artist, yet it doesn't wear them out with too many non-hit recordings. The selections for each group are well chosen. The Shangri-Las' picks are especially nice as they really give a good feel for the melodrama the band traffics in. The rest are fine too, though it would have been nice to hear four Cookies songs instead of slipping an Earl-Jean (one of the Cookies) solo single in. This disc would be a nice purchase for a girl group novice who wants a slightly more focused experience. Anyone who really wants a complete girl group experience should track down collections by each of the artists here however, especially the Shangri-Las. ~ Tim Sendra
