About the Author

Janet S. Fulton PhD, RN, ACNS-BC, Associate Professor, Indiana University School of Nursing, is the Program Coordinator for the Adult Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) major. She has many years of experience as both a CNS and CNS educator in the area of adult health with a focus in oncology. She is actively engaged in promoting the CNS role and practice nationally and internationally, having served as a member of the Executive Committee for the American Nurses Association Council of Clinical Nurse Specialists, president of the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists and coordinator of the CNS Specialist Interest Group for the Oncology Nursing Society. Dr. Fulton is currently the Editor of Clinical Nurse Specialist: The Journal for Advanced Nursing Practice.

A clinical nurse specialist is an expert in an area of practice that is responsible for the translation of evidence-based knowledge into the delivery of patient care.
Purpose: It is intended for use as textbook for the education of clinical nurse specialists (CNS) and in continuing education programs for the CNS. The format is based on the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists' curriculum recommendations. The authors are focused on preparing future CNSs for their ever-evolving role in healthcare.
Audience: It is written for graduate students in clinical nurse specialist programs, but it also is an exceptional book for established clinical nurse specialists currently working in their specialty area. The editors and contributors are experts in the role of the clinical nurse specialist and in the area of education.
Features: This logically organized book consists of seven units that cover the topic from the inception of the role to essential knowledge for current practice and concludes with two sections of exemplars in differing settings and specialties. Chapters are clearly written, flow in an orderly fashion, and are well documented with up-to-date references.
Assessment: This is a wonderful addition to the field of nursing. The final two units of the book, on different setting and different specialties, are excellent resources for beginning or student clinical nurse specialists who may be in the process of defining their roles. The book also addresses the concerns of CNSs who are either currently in the role or are preparing to take on the role.
