Forever Twenty
The love of flying was always a driving force in Robert Timmer’s life as he grew up in the 1920’s and 30’s in the West Michigan town of Wyoming Park. It would lead him to leave his family and sweetheart (before the bombing of Pearl Harbor) to join the Royal Canadian Air Force, and eventually serve as a pilot with both the RAF and the USAAF during WWII.

In his biography of one man’s all too short life, author Nicholas Timmer gives the reader a well-researched glimpse into what it took to prepare a raw recruit to ultimately fly a cumbersome B-24 Liberator with the famed “Ted’s Travelling Circus” of the Mighty Eighth Air Force. From basic training to the courageous bombing of the Ploesti oil fields, the author paints a clear picture—sometimes humorous, sometimes heart-rending—of the fortitude and sacrifice it took to be an airman.

There were many heroes in the air war to end Fascist aggression. This is one of their stories.
