This novel is essentially a modern myth that deals with one of the principal concepts of civilized society - freedom. As is common with many myths, the story's main character, Chip Halick, a newspaper journalist, possesses what is essentially a superpower, something rarely if ever witnessed within his profession - he is able to distill the truth he uncovers into its essential meaning.
As the story unfolds, we find Chip playing an essential role in the political career of the Michigan governor as a result of some excellent reporting that has has done and for which he has won awards for himself and the newspaper. As the reader learns more about the governor and his political agenda it becomes clear that freedom (and one's right to it) are concepts that lack a center of gravity, rather, they are defined and defended according to the ideology and beliefs of those who demand from others their personal freedom and the rights that, often, they themselves define.
Over the course of the plot, the protagonist faces one circumstance after another that threaten some aspect of freedom and rights. Ultimately, Chip finds himself wrestling with his own personal freedom in order to properly do his job. And thus, at the summit of the story, he faces a moral dilemma whose resolution may cost him his career and the Michigan governor his reelection.
Thematically, the story deals with several controversial topics, including politics, religion, journalism, laws, and societal mores.
