“Follow These Simple Instructions” is a quirky, uplifting comedy about a body grooming venture that goes terribly awry.
Chester, a shy, twentysomething virgin with OCD, just moved out of his parents’ basement into a one-bedroom apartment. For the first time in his life he has some privacy, and one night, wanting to take advantage of this, he decides to wax his back. Maybe having a smooth, hairless back will give him the confidence he needs to ask women out on dates – and if he asks out enough women, maybe one of those women will respond in the affirmative, and he and she will hit it off, and he’ll finally be able to lose his virginity.
Unfortunately, it turns out that waxing one’s back is a job best left up to the professionals. Not only does Chester fail to remove his back hair, he succeeds in covering his back and hands, as well as various fixtures, appliances, and surfaces in his kitchen and bathroom, with thick, brown, sticky wax.
It’s a neat freak’s worst nightmare!
Throughout the night and into the early morning, Chester struggles to erase all signs of his body grooming debacle. Eventually, though, when the logical, left-brain thinking that normally serves him in life now proves ineffective, he’s forced to think outside the box. The solution that ultimately occurs to him is bold and unconventional, even a little absurd, and to commit to it will require a huge leap of faith on his part.
With “Follow These Simple Instructions” author Jeffrey Stoker once again demonstrates himself to be a master of his craft. The story’s vivid imagery is hypnotic, creating a completely convincing situation and setting that instantly draws the reader in. This, combined with Stoker’s engaging central character, a psychologically-complex underdog worth rooting for, makes “Follow These Simple Instructions” a moving and memorable read.
