About the Author

Gloria Cruz has always dreamed of working on children’s books. Now she writes and edits them in her New York City apartment with her favorite furry roommates, her two dogs.

Sarah Rebar is an illustrator and writer based in sunny Los Angeles. She earned her BFA in illustration from Syracuse University. For nine years, she worked as an in-house artist for Sesame Street drawing Muppets. She collaborated to create new Muppets for Ahlan Simsim, an international coproduction for young Syrian refugees, funded by the MacArthur genius grant. Her all-time favorite characters are Bert and Ernie. Now, she illustrates books for kids.

Gr 2–5—Though it may seem unfathomable to anyone over the intended age to think of the decade as historical, this lighthearted look back at the 2000s is a fine vehicle for reading skills practice with a side of pop culture fun. A glossary on the opening page introduces potentially unfamiliar vocabulary words, which are printed in bold within the text for convenient reference. Young readers will get a kick out of descriptions and images of fashion trends, food novelties, entertainment, and now-outdated technology, which the adults in their lives will recall effortlessly. A mix of cartoonlike illustrations and stock photographs support the narrative and add context clues, while colorful callout boxes emphasize key concepts. Combined with a vivacious tone, it is an engaging read. The book does make mention of specific brands and TV show titles, which some families will appreciate knowing ahead of time. VERDICT A fun addition to early reader collections that will introduce kids to new vocabulary via popular cultural references, while sparking recent nostalgia in adults.—Shannon Titas
