Overview

Essence Of The Story, "Flappy"

Being bullied can affect a person right to their very core.

Surviving bullying with resilience takes hard work and help.

This story is designed to give children help by giving them an idea on how to survive bullying.

With the motto "From Zero To Hero!", the main character is an everyday pigeon who finds the strength within to turn the very reason he was bullied into the very foundation of becoming a hero.

An emotional story, the outcome is happy, suggesting to the reader that taking on challenges can lead to great rewards and happiness - as well as a growth in self-esteem and self-respect.

The pigeon is nicknamed Flappy because his wings make such noise when he attempts to fly. Bullied by others, he is also shamed into leaving his home and family. It is some time later that this very flapping of his wings helps him save the princess from the dragons and win an award for his bravery.

What's At Stake When A Child Doesn't Overcome Bullying?

Bullying can handicap normal emotional development: the child's emotional resilience is weakened along with their social & coping skills. This leads ultimately to far greater problems in teenager and young adult years - often lasting even a lifetime.

Antibullying is an extremely important approach we all need to take and is the basis for this book.

Benefits Of Choosing This Book.

Equally recommendable for the individual child as good reading material as well as a great story upon which discussions around the topic of antibullying can be focussed. With the illustrations, his book lends itself to classroom discussions. It supports the development of emotional resilience by offering a relatable character that finds it's inner strength to overcome bullying. The story gives two strong messages to the readers.

Firstly, how it feels like to be bullied and secondly, that the path to surviving bullying is to seek the hero within.

The choice of main character is chosen deliberately from our daily lives as it can be seen everywhere and can act as a constant reminder "From Zero To Hero - if a pigeon can do it, so can I!

This is a charming, good read.

About the Author

A mother of two children, I have studied and worked all around the world, mainly in Germany.

Originially from Ireland, the storybook Flappy I have written tells the tale of my character who is bullied and has to leave home as a result.

It is how he overcomes the bullying and the friendship he makes as a result that makes this a great read fro any child who either has been bullied or is acting like a bully.

Bullying can hurt to the very core and the aim of this book is to give at minimum one child out there a character to whom they can relate and an idea how to survive bullying.

Childen find this an amazing read and schools are beginning to use this book as a reader.

Discussion points after reading this book would include:

This story encourages children to realise that success is failure turned inside out; what you think is your "worst" feature may well be the very feature that leads to your individual success.

While belonging to a group can be great, recognizing your own Individuality is important.

Bullying is so wrong. It hurts to the core. It happens to others too - it even happened to a pigeon!

Adults get it wrong sometimes.

Apologies matter.

Rise to the challenge, it could be life-changing.

Bad phases in life CAN change for the better.

Friends can be found in the strangest of ways - but only if you "get out there".

The Hero in your life is within You.

These are all messages that I would love for children to understand from this story and my hope is, that it can make them feel stronger, especially in face of modern day challenges.
