Francesco Petrarca, (7/20/1304 - 7/(18-19)/1374) Italian scholar and poet during the early Italian Renaissance. He is credited as being one of the earliest humanists.
During the Renaissance, Petrarch's sonnets were admired and imitated throughout Europe. His style became a model for lyrical poetry. Petrarca is known for being the first to develop the concept of the Dark Ages.
