About the Author

Rodney A. Brooks was born in Syracuse, NY, in 1932. He attended the University of Florida and Harvard University, where he received his Ph.D. in physics with Norman Ramsey in 1963. During 25 years at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, he published 124 refereed articles on medical imaging, including the design of a high-resolution Neuro-PET scanner. As an amateur clarinetist he founded and led a klezmer band called Shir Delite. After retiring in 1999 he and his wife lived for nine years in New Zealand, where he founded Kiwis for Balanced Reporting on the Middle East (www.kbrm.org.nz).
