Description: This is a comprehensive treatise on the current understanding of fibromyalgia. It is extremely well written, providing the diagnostic criteria and treatment as well as a clear discussion of the psychosocial aspects of the diagnosis.
Purpose: The preface notes the challenge that fibromyalgia poses for clinicians, then outlines the purpose of presenting a logical approach for the primary care provider encountering patients with the symptoms of fibromyalgia. In face of the perplexing complex of symptoms, this is a most worthy endeavor, and one that is accomplished very well.
Audience: Primary care clinicians are the intended audience, as the majority of patients will initially present to them. Likewise, the book is also extremely valuable for others, including specialists, counseling nurses, and patients for all to understand the current thinking and acceptable modalities of treatment currently available. The editors and contributors appear to be well versed in the disease.
Features: The strength of this book lies in the comprehensiveness of the evidence-based understanding. It begins with the historical background and theories of the cause of fibromyalgia. This is followed by an approach to evaluating the symptoms and physical examination of the patient. With the relatively recent approval of medication to treat the symptoms, this is covered extremely well, as are the complementary and alternative medicine approaches currently popular. A major inclusion is the comprehensive bibliography of literature supporting the discussion.
Assessment: This is an extremely important book for primary care clinicians who may see patients complaining of fibromyalgia symptoms and a very useful addition to a primary care library.
