About the Author

​Prof. Michaël Grynberg is an obstetrician gynecologist specialized in reproductive medicine. He completed his PhD on the regulation of follicular growth and AMH production. In 2014, he became a Professor of Reproductive Medicine and head of the Department of Reproductive Medicine&Fertility Preservation at the University Hôpital Jean Verdier, Bondy, France. Since mid-2017, he has been head of the Department of Reproductive Medicine&Fertility Preservation at the University Hôpital Antoine Béclère, Clamart, France.  In addition, he is an active member of the basic research unit INSERM U 1133, Université Paris Diderot-CNRS UMR 8251. His research interests initially included the assessment of ovarian follicular status and the regulation of anti-Müllerian hormone, a key peptide in ovarian function. Over the past 5 years, he has expanded his field of research to include onco-fertility. Indeed, female fertility preservation has recently emerged in the field of reproductive medicine. Michaël Grynberg is a pioneer on female fertility preservation in France and has recently become the President of the French Society of Onco-Fertililty. He is also deputy of the fertility preservation special interest group of the ESHRE and Head of the Fertility Department at the French College of Obstetrician Gynecologists. Prof. Grynberg has authored or co-authored over 150 peer-reviewed articles in international journals and books.

Dr Pasquale Patrizio is an internationally recognized, board-certified specialist in Obstetrics&Gynecology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and Andrology, and holds a Master in Bioethics.  He is a Professor and Director of the Yale University Fertility Center and Fertility Preservation Program.  He is an associate editor for the Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics, and a section editor for both the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Reproductive BioMedicine Online. He was a founding member of the International Society for Fertility Preservation (ISFP) and served as President from 2015 to 2016. He has authored 6 books, nearly 500 articles and book chapters, and holds 2 US patents (in diagnostics and therapeutics).  Among his many contributions to the field, he co-pioneered the Microsurgical Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (MESA) technique; discovered that congenital absence of the vas deferens is a mild, genital form of cystic fibrosis; reported on microdeletions on the Yq chromosome responsible for severe oligospermia; introduced methods for assessing oocyte quality using genetic analysis of cumulus cells; and identified causes of oocyte aging as secondary to follicular and cumulus cell hypoxia.  His main research interests include:  Improving the efficiency of ART, ovarian aging, fertility preservation strategies for cancer and non-medical conditions, ovarian and testicular tissue vitrification, and methods for freeze-drying gametes and stem cells.

Description: In this ambitious textbook, the authors have set out to provide a comprehensive review of the burgeoning field of fertility preservation. The chapters are written by pioneers and preeminent scholars in the field and cover nearly every aspect of fertility preservation, from basic physiology to pharmacologic mechanisms to reproductive surgery to experimental science to ethical and legal considerations. A clinical focus is maintained throughout, with clinical cases and clinical pearls included in nearly every chapter.
Purpose: The purpose of this textbook is to present a state-of-the-art review of fertility preservation that addresses the entire spectrum of relevant medical issues that require fertility preservation. As the authors demonstrate throughout the textbook, the field has experienced rapid advances in the last decade, with many more promising therapies in active development. Given these recent and upcoming changes, a textbook of this scope and purpose is greatly needed. This textbook successfully achieves its primary objective in providing a comprehensive yet accessible resource of fertility preservation for healthcare providers.
Audience: The audience is reproductive medicine practitioners at all stages of career development, as well as nursing staff, medical students, residents, fellows, and interested medical providers. The authors are all foremost experts in the chapter topics they present, and together they represent the best academic institutions worldwide.
Features: Fertility preservation intersects many different disciplines and often involves complex decision-making in the context of competing patient priorities. Overall, the authors strike a very good balance between basic science and clinical care content. The first four chapters in particular are an excellent introduction to key principles and physiology related to female fertility preservation and set the stage for the remainder of the content that follows. The textbook does not limit itself to the medicine behind fertility preservation. Many of the surgical chapters, such as "Techniques for Ovarian Tissue Transplantation," are a particular pleasure to read, with helpful diagrams, photographs, and charts of outcomes data; these chapters should be considered essential reading for any reproductive surgeon involved in fertility preservation. Another noteworthy feature of the book is the inclusion of benign pathologies that often get overlooked in discussion of fertility preservation, including endometriosis, Asherman's syndrome, and Mullerian agenesis. The various topics are logically organized and most chapters flow well to the next, building on general considerations before moving on to specific pathologies and procedures. To demonstrate its commitment to providing a comprehensive treatment of the field, after addressing multiple aspects of female and male fertility preservation, the final section includes chapters on psychological, ethical, and legal aspects of fertility preservation. There is some redundancy in content, which is to be expected in a textbook with such a broad scope and large authorship pool. Grammatical and typographic errors, as well as inconsistencies in chapter layout, can be distracting at times, though, overall, the layout is visually pleasing and the tables and figures (when present) enhance the work. The chapters are concise and not overly long, providing a pace that is, at times, brisk but refreshing, as the authors have clearly taken pains to keep a sharp focus and convey the most clinically relevant and impactful data. Expert commentary is well supported by references and data.
Assessment: This is arguably the most comprehensive textbook of fertility preservation to date. Despite the relentless advancement of the field, it will be a helpful resource for reproductive medicine practitioners now and for years to come.
