Description: This book on the clinically important infectious diseases of domestic cats is presented in a case-based format, using the realistic perspective of how they present clinically.
Purpose: This approach provides a highly practical alternative to the typical disease/causative agent approach in most textbooks, and the innovative formatting is exceptionally well suited to support the authors' goal of developing a practical book for learning and self-assessment
Audience: The book is directed at veterinary students engaged in clinical training and to small animal practitioners for learning, review, and self-assessment of their clinical management of feline patients with infectious diseases.
Features: Information is presented in a series of 199 short clinical synopses, each describing an individual case presentation or additional clinical information about an individual case. Where appropriate, synopses are accompanied by pertinent images which accurately illustrate a reported clinical finding. Each synopsis is followed by a series of 2 to 4 questions, which prompt readers to make assessments of the information, develop differential lists, and formulate case management plans. These questions also serve to highlight the salient clinical features of the case and, thus, the particular infectious disease process. Synopses and questions are presented on a right-hand page, followed by a short discussion of the case information and answers to the questions on the next page, an artful design which provides readers with immediate and directed feedback and maximizes the learning. A key to cases classified by organ system and by category of infection (viruses, bacteria, parasites, fungi) appears at the front of the book, but the actual case descriptions are not presented in any particular order, so readers have no preconception of the disease processes based on the order in which the cases appear, resulting in a much more realistic presentation for clinical problem-solving. Accompanying images are pertinent and of excellent quality.
Assessment: This book presents a subject of enduring clinical significance in an innovative format exceptionally suited to effective clinical training. This is an outstanding contribution to the veterinary library and provides veterinary students and small animal veterinarians with a valuable tool for learning and review.
