Overview

When General Zachery Taylor led his Army into Mexico in 1846, Sarah Bowman went along as a laundress. Standing almost six feet tall, she gained the nickname The Great Western. She became a familiar figure, riding through the smoke and gunfire of battle to retrieve the wounded. The men of the Second Artillery made her an honorary member of their unit, and she was the only woman buried in the military cemetery at Ft. Yuma.
