About the Author

Marta Breen is a nonfiction author with a number of publications to her name. Among other things, she has written the story of women in Norwegian music, Born Feminist,and the bestselling 60 Women You Should Know About, in collaboration with illustrator Jenny Jordahl. They have also worked together on the book The F Word, which won the Norwegian Ministry of Culture's textbook prize for young people.

Jenny Jordahl is a prizewinning illustrator and cartoonist who runs the comic strip blog Livet blant dyrene (Life Among the Animals). She has illustrated several books with Marta Breen, among others. Jordahl debuted as an author with the picture book Hannemone and Hulda in 2017.

From the first female who struggled for women's rights in 17th-century Iran to those leading the present #metoo movement, this volume captures the fight in words and illustrations. This is the story of many cultures, from Harriet Tubman in America to Millicent Fawcett in the UK to Malala Yousafzai of Pakistan. It's also a history lesson of how laws and institutions have impacted women's lives over time. Breen (60 Women You Should Know About) covers historical topics such as women's suffrage, providing a time line of women getting the right to vote worldwide, the abolitionist movement, the battle for equal access to education, jobs, and contraception, as well as abortion and gay rights. There's a lot to include, and the author succeeds in touching on a great deal in just over 100 pages. The cartoon drawings with splashes of color by Jordahl (Live Among the Animals) add a quick visual pace to the overall narrative. VERDICT Breen's straightforward style makes this ideal for middle school readers and beyond.
