About the Author

Kathryn “Cassie” Giles Groll, DNP, CNM, is a doctorally prepared, certified nurse midwife, who is part of a full-scope OB/GYN private practice in New Jersey. She earned her master’s degree in nursing and doctoral degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She is licensed in both New Jersey and New York as a certified nurse midwife with prescriptive authority and as an OB/GYN nurse practitioner in the state of New York. She has worked as a midwife since 2006 and clinically as an RN in obstetrics in a variety of capacities, including as a clinical instructor of obstetrics at Columbia University, New York, and in the high-risk women’s health float pool at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, New York. She is a member of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, the Medical History Society of New Jersey, and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. She has served as an advocate for sexual assault victims in Somerset, New Jersey.

Description: This book is a quick reference pocket guide designed with the novice labor and delivery nurse in mind. In this third edition, basic information about standard obstetrical nursing care is provided by topic, in a bulleted format, to support new labor and delivery nurses in the L&D environment regarding everyday procedures, requisite equipment, and how to handle emergencies.
Purpose: This quick reference pocket guide's purpose is to provide a tool that is simple in use and format to prevent overwhelm. It delivers foundational knowledge in a bulleted format to facilitate quick access to critical information to aid decision-making. This guide supports the objective of providing novice labor and delivery nurses with the basic information necessary to navigate the labor and delivery environment.
Audience: This book is designed for novice labor and delivery nurses. It does a good job of highlighting the basic knowledge required for safe nursing care in a labor and delivery unit. The book is authored by a full-scope OB-GYN certified nurse midwife who is also a board-certified lactation consultant.
Features: The book is divided into three sections: general orientation and labor and delivery overview, procedures, and emergencies. The general orientation and labor and delivery overview section presents standard definitions, obstetrical terminology, and common mediations. The procedures section provides information about common procedures performed in labor and delivery and provides their definition, indication, expected outcome, and complications that might arise. The final section presents the management of obstetrical emergencies. Throughout the book, detailed black-and-white illustrations are presented to aid in understanding both routine procedures and complications. The appendixes are well done, presenting common abbreviations; an alphabetic synopsis of commonly utilized medications during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum; and flow charts.
Assessment: The preface states that this third edition has been completely updated to reflect the newest evidence-based practice guidelines, including aromatherapy, new information on breastfeeding, labor progression, amniotic fluid embolism, and prematurity. Since evidence frequently changes, this new edition was warranted. Unfortunately, this edition fails to present current evidence in many areas. For example, the author presents active labor as 3-4 cm. However, the definition of active labor changed in 2010 to 6 cm dilation. In the author's presentation of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, the diagnostic criteria presented is not in alignment with current practice guidelines. While the book overall is useful, it is concerning that numerous sections present outdated information.
