Description: This is a quick reference with basic information on defining, assessing, and treating substance use disorders across the lifespan.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide clinicians with important tools and resources to help identify and treat patients with substance use disorders. Our society is in the midst of an opioid crisis. This book is timely and needed.
Audience: The audience is nurses, APRNs, and PAs. The book certainly also be could useful to physicians. The authors are experts in this area.
Features: This well-organized book covers assessment, identification, and treatment options (both for detoxification and maintenance) of substance use disorders. It is pocket sized, making it easy to carry. The only shortcoming is that SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment) is discussed at the end of the book. Since many primary care and non-psychiatric care providers may use this book, it would have been much more useful to discuss SBIRT in the second chapter.
Assessment: This book is very helpful and all primary care providers should be encouraged to use it.
