The chapters often feature objectives, "Fast Facts," case studies, and references for its content. Readers can expect to garner foundational information on LGBTQ+ history, lexicon, and general considerations as well as a deeper dive into population-specific health disparities, culturally competent nursing care practices, and advocacy opportunities. Institutional- and self-assessment tools are offered for readers to inventory and assess beliefs, practices, and policies.
Purpose: This book aims to provide a concise primer on LGBTQ+ populations to promote culturally competent and inclusive nursing care. The goals are to walk readers through the general history and development of the LBGTQ+ community; highlight health disparities; address nursing considerations; and promote change on individual, organizational, professional, and governmental levels. These overarching goals are important for ensuring equitable patient care in nursing. While the book largely addresses all goals, the individual objectives listed at the start of each chapter are not always met within that specified chapter. This is particularly true for earlier sections of the book and may cause difficulty if using this text in a classroom or formal education setting. While the content of this book can be found in other texts, this book compresses a large volume of pertinent information into an approachable size for all readers.
Audience: Through his numerous presentations, the author is recognized as an expert on LGBTQ and gender identity. His doctoral work on LGBTQ cultural competence set the stage for his future publications on this topic. This particular book is written for nurses across all contexts and experience levels. While some content applies to the full spectrum of nurses, the majority of the information appears best suited to current and future direct care providers and their educators. This book will meet these individuals' educational needs and additional inquiry can be supported by the resources offered in the back of the book. Leadership may use this book as a basic primer but will benefit from seeking out alternative texts for a more thorough review of advocacy opportunities and organizational initiatives.
Features: This book combines the format of a textbook with the readability of a leisure novel. It covers a wide array of LGBTQ content in a condensed, clean format, though readers may find themselves distracted by repeated typographical and grammatical errors. Additionally, although the title includes the "+," there is limited discussion of LGBTQ associated populations. The book would benefit from more inclusion of intersex, asexual, and gender-variant population content. Readers are guided through material in an organized fashion, beginning with a foundational overview of the LGBTQ community, pertinent concepts, history, and related stigma and discrimination tribulations. This background information flows seamlessly into the origins and complexities of the health disparities faced by LGBTQ populations, but can become redundant in subsequent sections. As with other LGBTQ care texts, substance use and mental health are a focus here, but the additional health considerations included in this book extend well beyond the confines of these two commonly discussed challenges. The nursing considerations found in this book are covered particularly well. While they include common cultural competency content, such as bias assessment and communication considerations, detailed discussion is provided on patient assessment techniques and specific care concerns of LGB, transgender, LGBTQ+ youth, and LGBTQ+ older adult subpopulations. Finally, the author includes educational opportunities, organizational initiatives, legal considerations, and advocacy opportunities toward the end of his book. While he informs nurses of legal considerations they should educate themselves on, the author does not reliably provide resources or content directing the readers on how or where to find this education. That said, the readers will benefit from numerous features in the book, including chapter-specific objectives, a vocabulary section, a thorough index, an annotated collection of additional resources for further education, information boxes, and case studies. The case studies are well crafted to support in-depth understanding and application of chapter content. The book also utilizes some unique features, such as "Fast Facts," which are short, highlighted asides that emphasize essential information. Additionally, many sections of the book are presented in an outline format, which helps readers organize and cluster their new knowledge.
Assessment: This book strikes a pragmatic balance between content inclusion and length, making it an easily approachable read that meets the needs of many audiences and successfully promotes culturally competent care of the LBGTQ population. The orderly format of the text allows readers to easily identify select information and provides a scaffold for content organization and comprehension. Although there are other books available that cover LGBTQ+ foundational knowledge and care considerations for clinicians, the nursing-specific focus of this text sets it apart. Readers may compare this title to Clinician's Guide to LGBTQIA+ Care: Cultural Safety and Social Justice in Primary, Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare, Mukerjee et al. (Springer Publishing Company, 2022), which covers similar content but focuses on different subpopulations and includes some additional content on specific healthcare topics like reproductive care. This book utilizes written conclusions that summarize information and help readers digest and process the material. Readers may also compare this book to LGBTQ Cultures: What Health Care Professionals Need to Know About Sexual and Gender Diversity, 3rd Edition, Eliason and Chinn (Wolters Kluwer, 2018), which covers similar content to this book and includes developmental transitions across the lifespan and family considerations. However, it lacks the same coverage of subpopulation-specific care considerations that are present in the book under review.
