Overview

The syndicated science fiction television series Farscape (airing in the U.S. on the Sci-Fi cable network) employed very different musical approaches to its first two seasons, as revealed on this soundtrack album, which features music from each group of episodes. The Australian composing team SubVision, consisting of Chris, Toby, and Braedy Neal, handled the first season. Their idea of the music of outer space turned out to be multicultural, but not otherworldly. Beginning with the pop/rock style of "Theme from Farscape," they employed such exotic but familiar influences as dance music ("Time Trouble"), Indian raga ("Tannot Grooves"), and Middle Eastern music ("Fields of Joy"), all noticeably earthbound. Guy Gross, who took over scoring the show for its second season, was no more inventive. In fact, he trucked in typical cliches and conventions derived from John Williams' Star Wars scores, and in turn from early serials like Buck Rogers. Martial beats, suspenseful slow passages, sudden climaxes -- Gross' ordinary work made one long for the more eclectic music of SubVision, and the difference is especially noticeable on a disc divided between the two. ~ William Ruhlmann
