PreS—Each spread of this simple, and simply lovely, board book features one animal. A large embossed silhouette in white and the name of the animal in clear black letters appear on the right. Some shapes are glossy, inviting young fingers to explore. On the left, the same image, miniaturized, interacts with itself in clever tessellations. The final page reads, "animals on the farm" and shows the six animals featured. The backgrounds are done in slightly grainy solid colors that lend a retro look. A graphically striking introduction to farm animals. Each right-hand page shows a bold linocut print of an animal in white and in profile against a mottled, richly hued background. The text simply labels the depicted animal--pig, sheep, dog, horse, goose or cow--in a clear, black type at the top of the page. One object, often related to the creature, rests nearby, such as a section of fence for the sheep or a bowl for the dog. The outline of each animal is embossed to provide a subtle tactile element. The facing left-side pages use smaller images of the animal in a repeating, interlocking, tricolor pattern. The final spread reviews the six critters, each in its own square panel, as the text reads, "animals on the farm." Simple and beautiful. (Board book. 3 mos.-2)
