The Ballad of Tom Dooley, (Thomas Dunne, 2011), a New York Times best seller, tells the true story behind the celebrated folk song. In 2008 Sharyn McCrumb was named a Virginia Woman of History for Achievement in Literature. Ghost Riders, an account of the Civil War in the mountains of western North Carolina, won the Wilma Dykeman Award for Literature given by the East Tennessee Historical Society and the Audie Award for Best Recorded Book. A new edition of Ghost Riders was published in March 2012 by J.F. Blair Press with a foreword by Michael Hardy, North Carolina’s Civil War Historian of the Year.
