But Taelya, a white mage, undercaptain of the road guard, and daughter of Fairhaven’s treasurer, worries that current allies may not prove trustworthy—a fear that’s confirmed at the worst possible moment, as the Fairhaven troops confront Gallosian soldiers and their strongest mage. Modesitt, never afraid to delve into the nitty-gritty details of magic, keeps an equally close eye on day-to-day life, like the making of a good breakfast, resulting in an immersive experience. Much like the troopers patiently marching to fulfill their duty, the book moves at a slow and steady pace, building up to a realistic and rewarding conclusion. Series fans are sure to be pleased.
