Description: This book explores the various entities that fall under extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Most of the authors come from regions where this disease is commonly encountered, and they write authoritatively. There is some redundancy in topics that are covered by multiple authors.
Purpose: Although not explicitly stated (no preface included), the purpose appears to be to provide a comprehensive review of the epidemiology, presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Given the worldwide burden of this disease, this book is needed, especially by clinicians in areas of high prevalence. Bearing in mind that there is some repetition, the content is thorough and well presented.
Audience: The authors are writing for clinicians managing patients with extrapulmonary tuberculosis, and the book is well suited for this audience. I suspect that this will be a valuable book in the collection of practitioners who commonly see these patients; for most clinicians in highly developed areas the book will be interesting but not likely to be highly used. The authors are largely based in Turkey.
Features: The book devotes a chapter to each of the major syndromes of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Generally, the format is similar: epidemiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment. The book pays considerable attention to detail and provides practical clinical information. The book would have benefited by pulling out some sections that are common to all the syndromes (diagnostic tests available and their performance characteristics, pharmacology, etc.), thus avoiding having to address them numerous times.
Assessment: This book would be a useful addition to the collection of any clinicians working in areas where tuberculosis is moderately or highly prevalent. Management of patients with any of the syndromes described would be helped by reviewing the relevant chapter, which can be done relatively quickly. This is a useful clinical reference for clinicians in many parts of the world.
