Exhuming Adam's X-Ray
Adam Temple, bodyguard to Brother John, travels with the self-ordained minister to watch his back. His bodyguard’s cover is the “church organist.” Now they are headed to a peculiar cult in the Utah mountains. Adam, a former hell raiser on a shiny red Harley-Davidson cycle, feels like Clark Kent in disguise.
The OLDS cult broke off from the Mormons in order to practice their own form of religion that promulgates several varieties of sex, including incest and polygamy. Kidnapping is tossed into the mix as necessary. Adam, who falls for the doctor’s daughter, is determined to save Rebekkah and her little sister, Hannah, from the clutches of the church councilmen. Hannah’s mama, however, throws up a series of surprising barriers to Adam’s plans, for no legitimate reason that Adam can fathom. Like, Rebekkah’s daddy threatens to amputate Adam’s arm!
Into this off-beat congregation bursts a convict who escaped from prison to show up on Brother John’s doorstep, the bishop whose home is set on fire while his family escapes to hide out in a cave, the missing church funds and the missing bishop. Apparently Adam’s x-ray film is buried in somebody’s grave, but not the actual corpse, who is still missing. Throughout the story runs the thread of dissent, as practiced by members of the high council who fight over church governance, and also by Rebekkah’s mama, who is discontented with the way the men are running things.
