Description: This book aims to do two things: be a complete handbook of shoulder examination and to provide a critical evaluation of how we approach and optimize our shoulder examination. It is a wonderful, complete compendium including the scientific and historic facets of a complete shoulder examination beginning with foundational principles and continuing through range of motion testing, motor testing, and specific examinations for unique pathologies.
Purpose: The goal of providing a comprehensive reference that all physicians, ranging from primary care to orthopedic shoulder specialists, can use to optimize their examination is admirable and one would think a difficult task. Dr. McFarland has done a remarkable job of presenting an easy to read, well organized book on the shoulder exam which will be of great benefit to the students, residents, primary care physicians, orthopedic surgeons, and shoulder specialists who read it.
Audience: Ed McFarland is Professor and Vice Chairman of Orthopedics and Director of the Shoulder Service at the world renowned Johns Hopkins University. More importantly, Dr. McFarland is a master educator who can make even complex topics easy to understand for his audience. He is an excellent clinical diagnostician who has found this means to share his physical exam skills and knowledge to a broad audience.
Features: The book's chapters cover topics ranging from foundational principles to specific targeted diagnoses such as impingement and rotator cuff disease, instability, and SLAP lesions. It is an easy read and quick reference to specific diagnoses. The images (and accompanying CD-ROM) are highly effective in making the exam techniques reproducible for the audience. If I had one wish, it would be to have the black-and-white pictures in color. This is only a minor shortcoming and does not decrease the effectiveness of the message and techniques.
Assessment: This is the best single book I have read on the topic of the shoulder examination. Dr. McFarland should be commended for creating a book which should be read by every orthopedic resident and would be a great benefit to all physicians who examine shoulders including students, primary care, rehabilitation medicine, and orthopedic physicians.
