The classic Coltrane quartet of the early '60s is presented here in a live setting. Coltrane's keening, Indian-influenced soprano is the most commanding presence, especially on the hypnotic "Inchworm" and the title tune, which manages to be tart and wistful at the same time. Tyner waxes rhapsodic, while the bass and drums quietly thunder underneath. The Coltrane original "Impressions," the longest piece (20 minutes), features his powerful tenor, but there is calm in the eye of the storm, and everyone gets a turn to shine in the spotlight. This is a good way to introduce yourself to one of the best -- and as history's proven, one of the most influential -- working jazz bands of the '60s (or any decade, for that matter). ~ Rovi Staff
