Secondo recenti studi, il mondo sarà ben presto dominato da tecnologie rivoluzionarie che dischiuderanno all’Umanità un’era di progresso accelerato. Principali risultati saranno la conquista dell’immortalità, la creazione di Intelligenze Artificiali superiori all’Uomo e la colonizzazione dell’universo da parte della nuova razza.
“Evoluzione: il futuro” è una storia mozzafiato ambientata in un prossimo futuro reso quasi irriconoscibile dalle nuove tecnologie.
XXIII secolo. Gli umani abitano la Terra e la Luna, ultime roccaforti del passato potere. Marte e la Rete sono popolate dalle intelligenze artificiali e dalle anime, queste ultime ottenute digitalizzando il cervello dopo la morte. La realtà virtuale consente alle due razze di comunicare. Le loro differenze sono profonde, gli interessi inconciliabili.
Con la digitalizzazione, gli umani hanno allontanato la morte reale a un futuro indeterminato, ma non si sentono felici: provano verso gli esseri virtuali, ammirazione, ma anche invidia e senso di inferiorità.
Le creature digitali invece mal sopportano di essere relegate in mondi troppo piccoli per le loro sconfinate ambizioni. Durante l’esperienza marziana, hanno sviluppato le competenze per gli ambienti extraterrestri, soprattutto hanno acquisito la sicurezza indispensabile per la colonizzazione di altri sistemi solari.
Gli umani finanziano il progetto Alfa Centauri, in cambio della rinuncia degli esseri virtuali ad espandersi sulla Terra. Prima della partenza, la Sicurezza Terrestre intercetta un messaggio sospetto proveniente dall’Agenzia Spaziale. Terrorismo? Gli indizi conducono agli Eletti, una setta entrata in Rete cinquant'anni prima con un suicidio collettivo…
Eva e Vittoria, i protagonisti, sono “anime”, esseri virtuali il cui cervello è stato digitalizzato dopo la morte. Si muovono in un contesto di cambiamenti epocali, rimanendone sempre più coinvolti, al punto di fondere il loro destino con quello del popolo digitale.
