Overview

Cornetist Ernie Carson and his Castle Jazz Band can always be relied upon for a solid set of San Francisco-style trad jazz. Sometimes Carson takes too many vocals, but on this release he only engages in relatively brief singing on five of the 13 selections; his colorful cornet solos compensate. Most of the material is quite obscure (only "I've Got Everything But You" comes close to being a standard) and includes such rarities as "A Real Live Girl," "Soft Shoe Shuffle," "Livin' Out of a Suitcase" and "Every Man a King." Carson shares the solo space with clarinetist Kim Cusack, trombonist Tom Bartlett and pianist Pete Clute, while banjoist Debbie Schreyer, tuba player Mike Wallbridge, and drummer Wayne Jones are fine in support. Nothing surprising occurs, but there are plenty of good feelings throughout the well-played date. ~ Scott Yanow
