Overview

Evangeline describes the betrothal of a fictional Acadian girl named Evangeline Bellefontaine to her beloved, Gabriel Lajeunesse, and their separation as the British deport the Acadians from Acadie in the Great Upheaval. The poem then follows Evangeline across the landscapes of America as she spends years in a search for him, at some times being near to Gabriel without realizing he was near.

About the Author

Henry Wadsworth Longfewllow was born on February 27, 1807, in Portland, Maine. He spent most of his youth in this quiet and charming town that inspired a number of his poems. When he was a young adolescent, he left for Bourdoin College, located about thirty miles from Portland. One of his classmates was Nathaniel Hawthorne, the future novelist who was to play a major role in the genesis of Evangeline.
