About the Author

Rhys Bowen is the author of the award-winning Molly Murphy and Constable Evans mysteries. Her novels have garnered an impressive array of awards and nominations, including the Anthony award for her novel For the Love of Mike and the Agatha Award for Murphy’s Law. Her books have also won the Bruce Alexander Historical Award and the Herodotus Award, and have been shortlisted for the Edgar, the Agatha, the Macavity, the Barry, and the Mary Higgins Clark Award.  She has also written Her Royal Spyness, a series about a minor royal in 1930s England, and she is the author of several short stories, including the Anthony Award–winning “Doppelganger.” Her story “Voodoo” was chosen to be part of the anthology of the best of 50 years of Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine.  Ms. Bowen was born in Bath, England, and worked as an announcer and studio manager for the BBC in London, before moving to Australia and then California. It was here she started writing children’s and young adult novels, and then moved on to mysteries with the Constable Evans novels. The pseudymous Bowen, a veteran English mystery author, continues the estimable cozy series starring Constable Evan Evans (Evans Above, 1997). Llanfair, North Wales, has suddenly become a hotbed of change: a single woman and her daughter move into the village; Colonel Arbuthnot, a yearly visitor from London, discovers a ruin in the nearby hills he claims is the relic of Camelot; and native Ted Morgan returns to his hometown with grandiose plans to turn an abandoned mine into a theme park. That the Colonel dies after he has sown visions of fame and plenty among Llanfair residents raises suspicions of homicide in Evans. When Morgan is found shot to death, Evans is convinced that the two incidents are related. With the help of Sergeant Watkins, he attempts to establish a connection between the prodigal former resident, the beautiful young woman and the elderly visitor. The only apparent link seems to rest in London, prompting the intrepid Welshmen to brave the metropolis and solve the case. In the course of tracking down the killer, Evans becomes the object of desire for the new woman, a turn of events that jeopardizes his relationship with a local teacher. Bowen's quiet humor and her appreciation for rural village life make this a jewel of a story. (Oct.)

The Welsh village of Llanfair is abuzz with gossip about recent events. There's the ancient ruin found by Colonel Arbuthnot, an impoverished 88-year-old who has visited from London every summer since the death of his Welsh wife. Then there's the town meeting at which native son Ted Morgan, reportedly a London tycoon but unseen in Llanfair for the last 20 years, expounds on his plans for turning the old slate mine into a Disney-esque theme park, a plan that enrages local butcher Evans-the-Meat. Even the arrival of Annie Pigeon and her small daughter Jenny causes talk, especially when Annie seems bent on attracting the unmarried, gentle Constable Evan Evans. More serious stuff ahead for Evan, though: mainly the discovery of the Colonel's body (drowned, with a nasty head wound) and, soon after, the shooting death of Ted Morgan, with Evans-the-Meat, over Evan's objections, arrested for the killing. Not until Evan and his division's Sergeant Watkins pay a visit to London does a trail emerge. It leads back to Wales and a neat if overcontrived denouement. A second outing (Evans Above) for the pseudonymous Bowen (author of nearly one hundred books for children and young adults). Her Evan Evans is a worthy entry in the warm tradition of M.C. Beaton's Hamish MacBeth and others. An easy-to-take mix of literate style, charming hero, and quiet mayhem.
