Description: This review of basic psychiatric topics is part of the Eureka series, which strives to present core biomedical principles in connection with their specific clinical relevance.
Purpose: The authors strive to "demystify" psychiatry by "providing clear, evidence-based explanations of mental disorders... [and] their management... [so the reader can] become capable and confident in managing psychiatric patients and to succeed in exams."
Audience: The authors identify medical students at all levels of training as their primary audience. This book could be a solid supplement for medical students in addition to their assigned lecture notes and additional test questions. Other students, including physician assistant and nurse practitioner, also could benefit from this book. Residents and attendings should look to other, more detailed books for references.
Features: This is a general overview of psychiatric topics including mood and psychotic disorders, substance abuse, treatment differences in the elderly, perinatal, and pediatric populations, psychiatric emergencies, and medical comorbidities. Each chapter begins with questions that are answered at the end. Chapters are full of case presentations that often include graphic illustrations and various graphs and charts to aid in readers' comprehension. Chapters are organized by major topics allowing for the reader to quickly get to the area of interest. The book ends with review questions and a helpful index, but does not include any references.
Assessment: Most third-year medical students I teach use First Aid for the Psychiatry Clerkship, 4th edition, Ganti et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2016) and/or Introductory Textbook of Psychiatry, 6th edition, Black and Andreasen (American Psychiatric Association Publishing, 2014) with various online test questions. This book could be substituted for those, but likely will not be used by medical students in the U.S. because it is a U.K. publication and therefore does not focus on DSM criteria. Further, because it targets medical students at all levels of training, it often is not as specific and detailed as the books noted above (especially on the topic of psychopharmacology),which deliberately focus on the USMLE-style exam taken at the conclusion of a clerkship.
