Purpose: The intent is to help readers "understand and deal with continuously changing global concepts of beauty." This is a laudable goal, which this book achieves by delineating the differences and similarities among various ethnicities and discussing how to "impact the patient's well-being."
Audience: The intended audience is facial cosmetic surgeons who attend to multiethnic populations.
Features: This is a thoughtful and carefully choreographed book, written by a coterie of international experts, that discusses the differences among various ethnic groups, including Latin American/Mestizo, African, Asian, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern. Each chapter discusses the aesthetic, ethnic, and cultural considerations along with various cosmetic trends, related to each ethnic group. Chapters also offer useful background material, including cultural and religious factors that must be considered by the surgeon to overcome these treatment challenges. The book commences with a discussion of the definition of beauty, along with the cultural and ethnic anatomical variations that compose the face. Surgery of the nose, face, lips, eyelids and brows, as well as noninvasive procedures are considered for each of the specific ethnic categories. Concluding chapters cover fat grafting, scar and keloid treatment, and skin-tightening devices in mixed-race patients. Didactic illustrations, intraoperative photographs, graphics, and tables are abundant throughout the book. Added bonuses are short videos of operative interventions, but they vary in quality although still instructive.
Assessment: Less is more when dealing with cosmetic rejuvenation of the face. This book provides an in-depth understanding of the ethnic variations in the face and, in doing so, arms surgeons with the tools necessary to be successful.
