Description: The book is presented in a logical and sequential manner to enhance understanding and learning. Key features include case presentations and "Ask Yourself" sections.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to help undergraduate nursing students develop and use principled behavior, both personally and professionally. The book is a tool in the personal growth of the undergraduate nursing student. The objectives are worthwhile and I believe essential for the development of a nurse who is a moral agent and can contemplate ethical issues and make ethical decisions.
Audience: This book is best suited for undergraduate nursing students and does an excellent job of meeting those needs. The authors are well qualified.
Features: The title is descriptive of the content of the textbook. The writing is clear and the content is presented in logical and sequential manner. The material is well organized. Self-awareness and holistic nursing are themes (threads) that flow through the chapters of this text. The authors do an excellent job of using principled behavior, self-awareness, and holistic nursing as the strands that bind the chapters together. I found the chapter on gender issues very interesting and timely, given the current focus on the patriarchy in government and the "Me Too" movement. The book also points out how the nursing profession must address gender bias within the profession. The fact that gender gaps in pay are also exhibited in the nursing profession, an historically female profession, with male nurses making more than female nurses, likely contributes to the gender bias within the profession. The ethical principle of distributive justice is a focus of this chapter. I found the section on global issues that interface with nursing practice to be thought provoking. This section presents a view that is not often focused on in nursing education: the need for nurses to be global citizens and advocates. In a future edition, I would like to see a chapter focused on the ethical issues related to pandemics.
Assessment: This book is of high quality for its intended audience. It is similar to other ethics textbooks on ethics for nursing students. The book's focus on self-awareness and holistic nursing does differentiate it from many other nursing textbooks on ethics. I value the way the authors have focused on self-awareness, stating "self-awareness is the ultimate tool for living a personally ethical life" (p. 64). I agree that self-awareness and values clarification underpin ethical decision making. To minimize or avoid the process of self-awareness decreases one's ability to make ethical decisions and to recognize the impact their own moral certainties have on their decisions and on their interactions with their patients. The focus on values conflict is extremely important. Helping nurses understand that their values and moral certainties may conflict with the values and moral certainties of their patients can prevent barriers in communication and enhance the therapeutic relationship.
