Overview

When Captain Pieter Thomas arrived in the New World roughly one hundred years after Columbus, he sought a new and more prosperous life as a fisherman in the fertile waters of the Caribbean. What he found, or rather, what found him, is an entirely different story. When a pair of ancient Arawak tomes are unearthed on the island of Camahogne, their discovery sets off a chain of events never recorded in the traditional annals of history.

Word of this revelation soon reaches Jeringas Mortifer, the malevolent king of the mainland south, who long desired to find the tomes of the lost prophecy and unlock the secrets of the scripture for himself. To recover them, the king sends forth his most harrowing servant - a mysterious being older than all of human history, with terrifying powers and an agenda of his own.

Shortly after the birth of his first son, Captain Thomas has a chance encounter with a local fortune teller, who confides that his family is at the very center of the unfolding lost prophecy. While a skeptical Pieter initially dismisses her claim as primitive folklore, he is dangerously unaware of the many pieces in play, and that the hunt for his infant son had already begun.

A lifelong fisherman, B. Thomas Harwood has probably spent as much of his life on water as he has on land. He grew up in The Republic of Texas near the Gulf of Mexico and often dreamed of visiting every island in the Caribbean. Though he has not quite accomplished that feat yet, he has journeyed to the entire region using only the gifts of his vivid imagination. The dark plans of a 2,500-year-old tyrant, Jeringas Mortifer, and his sinister assistant, the Soul Collector, kick off this new fantasy series set in the 12th century with a tone of dread. Captive clairvoyant Azura reports that recently discovered stone tablets foretell of a challenger to his rule, and Mortifer sends the Soul Collector in search of Peiman, the one seer who can properly decipher the tablets. Harwood skillfully keeps this tale of legend and myth grounded in reality. Simple fishermen Capt. Pieter Thomas and first mate Franklin Smit of Statia—who think the European imperial powers could easily smash Mortifer—provide another link to the real world. Meanwhile, the determination of the newly freed inhabitants of Camahogne to preserve their liberty and the Soul Collector's solicitation of aid from a vampire colony suggest that a protracted struggle between the powers of light and darkness looms. Hardcore fantasy fans will relish this witch's brew of the macabre and the fantastic.

Mortifer and the Collector seek two prophetic stone tablets, which tell of a Child of Prophecy who will free the Caribbean of evil. As the plot unfolds, a seer—the Mother of the Third Eye—guides the Dutch fisherman. In a vision, she shows him his newborn son's stupendous but fraught future. Later, as readers learn the appalling key to Mortifer's immortality, he orders the Collector to explore an alliance with an island of vampires. In the final pages, the heavens confirm the approach of a cataclysmic conflict. Here and elsewhere, readers will see the influence of other epics—The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, the New Testament, and tales of King Herod. But the novel stands well on its own. Impressively, a wide range of characters and settings lives vividly on the page: African slaves, British officers, and Spanish sailors, vulnerable clairvoyants and Romanian bloodsuckers all play their parts. But the Collector of Souls unquestionably leads the pack. Harwood has wisely endowed him with a sense of honor, which, even while he serves a sordid master, humanizes and redeems him.With a riveting villain, diverse cast, and mesmerizing violence, this epic offers plenty of meat on the bone for sword and sorcery fans.
