About the Author

Dr. Aschheim has more than 25 years of private practice experience in all aspects of cosmetic and restorative dentistry. He has lectured and conducted workshops throughout the world and has been a major contributor to the dental literature.

He joined the staff of the Department Of Dentistry at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in as a Clinical Instructor and was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1992 and Section Chief of Esthetic Dentistry and Advanced Technologies in 1999. He was elevated to Associate Clinical Professor in 2004. He also joined the staff of the Advanced Programs for International Dentists at New York University College of Dentistry as an Associate Clinical Professor in 2011.

Following the September 11th attack of the World Trade Center, Dr. Aschheim became a dental consultant to the Office of the Medical Examiner for the City of New York. He was instrumental in setting up the digital image acquisition section and served as a liaison between the department and the developer of the dental identification software utilized by the NYC Medical Examiner's office. Since that time he has developed a new software package that should further reduce the time necessary to make a dental identification in mass disasters and has given lectures and workshops on the subject. He was appointed Assistant Chief Forensic Odontologist to the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner in 2009. He has also consulted throughout the world on Forensic Dental Informatics and won the ADA SCDI Informatics award in 2011.

Description: This second edition reveals itself as a comprehensively constructed text. Experts from the U.S. present state-of-the art techniques and material pertaining to esthetic dentistry. The 606 pages are easy to follow.
Purpose: The purpose is to create a definitive, all encompassing, single source of information presented in a clinically relevant, easy-to-use format.
Audience: All dentists and dental students interested in being updated in the broad scope of esthetic dentistry will benefit from this book
Features: The book is divided into six major sections: troubleshooting; principles of esthetics; esthetic materials and techniques; esthetics and other clinical applications; esthetic practice management; and appendixes. All techniques are reviewed, from dental bonding agents, to color modifiers and opaquers, direct and indirect use of composite resins, all porcelain systems, porcelain fused to metal restorations, acrylics, and bleaching systems. The fourth section also relates esthetic dentistry to other dental specialties and procedures, such as esthetics and electrosurgery, implant prosthetics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, orthodontics, maxillofacial surgery, laser and plastic surgery, as well as other advanced computer-related technologies. The appendix provides a rather complete list of manufacturers and a succinct index.
Assessment: This troubleshooting guide is particularly well thought out. Readers are expeditiously referred to the appropriate chapter after going through an easy to follow problem-solution grid. Many aspects regarding the handling of particular materials vary considerably, and it is therefore difficult to apply every single pearl provided to every single composite system available. Interesting clinical tips are inserted throughout the text to reinforce a particularly important point or provide a practical clinical pearl. Even though many chapters are meticulously constructed, well-referenced, and properly visually documented, many of the illustrations are of questionable quality. Framing, exposure, clarity, and magnification of many images do not project optimal results. Another drawback is that the bibliography for too many chapters is outdated. There are many notable omissions, especially in the presentation of available materials (IPS Empress, II, Captek, etc.) As a summary, even though this book is mostly well constructed, I did not find most of the selected clinical cases to be particularly extraordinary esthetically. This book will provide readers with some valuable written information, as opposed to dramatic before-and-after visual results.
