About the Author

Terri Goodman, PhD, RN, CNOR is a perioperative nursing education consultant. Her clinical practice focused on plastic and reconstructive surgery, and she has held positions from Staff Nurse to Director in acute care settings. Since 1992, she has focused on nursing education in acute care facilities, for Johnson and Johnson, and as an independent consultant. Terri is active in AORN both at the chapter and national levels, has published frequently in peer-reviewed nursing journals, contributed chapters to textbooks and study guides, and has delivered presentations on a wide variety of topics both nationally and internationally.

Cynthia Spry has been a perioperative nurse for more than twenty-five years, with seven and a half years as an OR Educator and five years as a Director of Surgical Services. Currently, she is an International Clinical Consultant for Advanced Sterilization Products, a Johnson & Johnson Company. In my present position, I provide consultation and education in sterilization, disinfection, and infection control in the Unit ed States and in many other countries. I am a Past President of the (national) Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and in 2002 received the Association's highest award, The Award for Excellence in Perioperative Nursing.

Description: This is the best introductory guide for new perioperative RN nurses in the operating room and a great resource for studying for the certification exam. It can be used as a self learning guide or part of a class. The website is an excellent resource as it offers online learning, the preferred learning method for RNs today. This edition is updated with culture of safety and ambulatory surgical facility information.
Purpose: The authors proclaim the book to be useful for nursing curriculum as well as for experienced nurses, and I agree. The online format is very handy, and the book and the website exceed the objectives due to the competency checklist.
Audience: The audience is students in nursing school, RNs who are new to the OR, and experienced RNs in the OR who can use the book as a reference or as a study guide for the certification exam. Both authors are highly educated and certified in the specialty.
Features: This edition reflects the latest evidence-based practices and includes regulations, another important aspect. Chapters build on each other, giving readers the entire picture. Each chapter has objectives, presenting the knowledge and skills covered in that chapter upfront. The book does an excellent job covering patient positioning, which is an area of safety concern. One area I would like to see covered is ethical situations in the perioperative arena, and it would be helpful to include some case studies on the website.
Assessment: This is a must-have book. It could assist with composing a competency list for the OR setting. Given the average age of students and the new graduates going into OR nursing, the online resource is a must. This edition updates the culture of safety and the perioperative environment to include some technology. The other great perioperative book is Alexander's Care of the Patient in Surgery, 15th edition, Rothrock (Elsevier, 2014), which is a good reference, but it is huge. This book is easier to use on a day-to-day basis, making it so much more practical.
