About the Author

Javad Parvizi, MD completed his medical training in the United Kingdom, graduating from University of Sheffield in 1991. He then completed his surgical training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, where he also attained a master’s degree from the Mayo Foundation in Molecular Biology involving evaluating bone healing and cartilage repair, which sparked his interest in both basic science and clinical research in the field of orthopedics. His fellowship training was completed under the direction of Professor Reinhold Ganz at Inselspital, Bern, Switzerland. Dr. Parvizi is currently a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Rothman Institute and Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA. He also is the director of clinical research and a member of the education committee. His dedication to education encompasses a number of activities including publication of numerous books and book chapters, and over 240 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Parvizi’s desire to provide succinct, accurate, and relevant information was the impetus behind this book.

Brian A. Klatt, MD graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1997. After completing his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh, he served 4 years on active duty with the United States Air Force. The final 2 years in the military were spent working with the residency program at Wilford Hall Medical Center, and it was there that his commitment to education was solidified. After an honorable discharge from the military, Dr. Klatt completed a fellowship in adult reconstruction at the Rothman Institute, Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. His decision to attend a fellowship at the Rothman Institute was a direct result of meeting Dr. Rothman at a lecture in San Antonio. Dr. Klatt has been lucky to be mentored by many of the great names in orthopedic surgery today. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Klatt returned to the University of Pittsburgh, where he continues to dedicate himself to the education of medical students and residents. His research interests are varied and encompass both clinical and basic science topics. He was honored to work with Dr. Parvizi in producing this text. Dr. Klatt hopes that this book will provide a quick and easy source for residents who seek to understand the essential information required to master total knee arthroplasty.

Description: The most unique facet of this book on total knee arthroplasty is that each chapter is coauthored by an attending expert in association with a resident, in order to ensure that the book is appropriate for residents and fellows in training. As expected, the chapters begin with a review of knee anatomy as it relates to arthroplasty and progresses to the complexity of revision surgery.
Purpose: The attending/resident design is intended to make this the "go-to" book for residents and fellows training in orthopedics and adult reconstructive surgery. Based on the high-quality books already available, this is a lofty goal that would be difficult to achieve.
Audience: Although its audience is residents and fellows in training, the book also would be a welcome addition to an academic institution's library where it would be well received by medical students rotating on the service. The staff and residents from the Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University are strongly represented among the authors. This is both a benefit and a hazard. It helps the flow and universal approach, but risks being internally biased on any issues of controversy.
Features: Each chapter is a well designed review of the topic and achieves its stated goal of readability and flow. I am afraid that too many of the topics are underrepresented with images. Clearly a book dedicated to a specific surgical technique requires numerous and high-quality images.
Assessment: This book introduces a new concept in education by bringing together residents and attendings as chapter authors. It succeeds as a unique offering from this perspective. However, while I do believe it is a worthy addition to the literature, it would not supplant one of the classic existing books on total knee arthroplasty.
