Description: This well written and comprehensive book reviews evidence-based approaches to the most common and important infectious illnesses encountered by primary care physicians. The authors provide up-to-date treatment algorithms and emphasize responsible use of antimicrobial agents.
Purpose: The authors summarize evidence-based approaches to the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic infectious illnesses using clearly written text and figures. However, the breadth of the topic leaves little room for coverage of public health or prevention aspects, and precludes in-depth review of the primary literature and original evidence that govern practice.
Audience: Medical students and primary care residents will find this a useful, quick review. Experienced practitioners may use some of the algorithms and treatment tables as a rapid point of care reference. More in-depth review of the primary evidence underlying treatment decisions will require other, more topic-focused resources.
Features: This ambitious book reviews essentially all infectious conditions encountered in primary care, ranging from simple upper respiratory infections to HIV. The content is accurate and up to date, with useful figures summarizing treatment options and decision algorithms. The index is easy to use. References are relatively few and tend to be to other review sources, with little reference to the primary literature that guides the recommended diagnostic and treatment approaches. Readers wishing more in-depth coverage of topics may need to find other resources on their own.
Assessment: This book provides a useful overview of current approaches to evidence-based diagnosis and management of common infectious conditions. The emphasis on responsible use of antimicrobials is appropriate. Medical students and residents in primary care training in particular may use this as a practical and time efficient review.
