From a Review in "Recommended Children's Books"
Ernie the Easter Hippopotamus, by Glenn Logan Reitze, is a beautiful story of a young hippopotamus who has a curious ability to make "naturally hard-boiled," brightly colored eggs. This gets the other hippos angry, and so he leaves - eventually swimming the Atlantic Ocean to New Jersey! There he finds happiness producing brightly colored eggs that are mistakenly credited to the "Easter Bunny." This is an odd tall tale, but beautifully written, and even more beautifully illustrated with more than 50 (yes, 50) pages of paintings, many of African animals such as a zebra, a crocodile, a rhinoceros, etc. I would put it up with the favorite books of my own childhood that gently seek to teach profound lessons beneath a very funny story.

From a review by the Strand Bookstore website:
"Ernie is an adorable hippopotamus. Come along on this lavishly illustrated Easter tale that has a touching message about following dreams and overcoming obstacles. With interesting information about real hippopotamuses, this story will be a pleasure for the whole family."
From a review on the Barnes & Noble website:
You'll fall in love with the plucky hippo who just wants to lay colored eggs to make people happy. The drawings are gorgeous, with very believable African animals. My kids love the book!"

From a review on the Amazon.com website:
[This is] one of my favorite children's books and a wonderful contribution to modern mythologies. Ernie is a charming and magical story giving a great new explanation for Easter traditions. Ernie the Easter hippo should go down in history as one of the best mythological creatures to make their home in New Jersey.
