Erika is a young girl in a difficult situation at home.
Her dad has recently died and left her mother with five adolescent boys and Erika at home.
Her mother is enjoying her new found freedom, and so is her brothers, leaving Erika in a home with no parental supervision, and a group of teenage boys running the house.
Erika usually turns to the Asbury's, friendly neighbors that share gardening and time with her, and provide her a place to escape to, but Mr. Asbury died just after Erika's dad.
Mrs. Asbury left, and Erika was alone to fend for herself.
Mrs. Asbury returns, and spring brings fresh promise to Erika, who quickly moves to start a garden at the Asbury's so she has somewhere to go.
To her surprise Erika grows much more than a garden in these visits and changes the course of many lives.
