Description: This is an extremely comprehensive book on epidemiology from a population health perspective. Written after the recent COVID-19 pandemic began, many important concepts about measures to protect the public as a whole have been emphasized. Each chapter contains chapter competencies and essential terminology in addition to end-of-chapter resources.
Purpose: According to the author, the COVID-19 pandemic was the impetus for this book as epidemiology "helps to know the unknown to decrease fear." Being at the core of public health, epidemiology can provide determinants of health patterns to help address ensuing problems.
Audience: The stated audience is advanced practice nurses (APRNs); however, many public health professionals could benefit from the book. Written for graduate students, the content is dense and requires a high readability level.
Features: The book is divided into five sections, with an additional sixth section for contributing appendices. Section I has three basic chapters on population health, determinants of health, and advanced practice nursing roles and competencies. Section II provides a comprehensive epidemiology review and section III, which includes tools and epidemiologic study designs, could be studied separately as a primer on epidemiology. Section IV describes the fields of epidemiology in practice, and section V highlights policy and ethics. Embedded in the chapters are numerous tables and boxes that add to the detailed narrative.
Assessment: This book provides clear and concise content for public health professionals, including APRNs. This knowledge can be shared to counter misinformation and chaos such as occurred in the COVID-19 pandemic.
