About the Author

Kristin Joy Pratt-Serafini first connected her love of art with her concern for the rainforest when she wrote and illustrated A Walk in the Rainforest as a freshman in high school. Since then, she has written and illustrated several other environmentally-focused books for children. She hopes her colorful paintings will get kids excited about going outside and exploring for themselves. Kristin first visited the BEN in 1997 as a college student, and was excited to go back with Rachel 10 years later, in March of 2007. As she wrote the story about Anna and Peter, and painted the animals and plants they saw, she could picture every step of their adventure through the rainforest... because she had just been to the BEN herself! Rachel took her on the same hike described in the story. She even saw the Rufous-eyed Stream Frogs on the night hike with Mark!

Rachel Crandell taught at Principia Lower School for 20 years after running a nursery school on their farm in Indiana. She and her husband started the Monteverde Conservation League, U.S. to help protect the Children's Eternal Rainforest. They have a cabin in Monteverde where they spend several months each year. Just like Peter and Anna in the story, her children and grandchildren have walked the paths, climbed the strangler fig, and heard the bellbird BONK. Besides researching and writing the scientific paragraphs for The Forever Forest, Rachel has motivated thousands of children and adults to help protect the BEN. She is known as "Rainforest Rachel" because of the hundreds of presentations she has done for school groups about tropical rainforests, and the trips she leads to Costa Rica.

Christopher Canyon is the illustrator of several wonderful books for children. When he isn't in his studio, Christopher enjoys traveling and providing educational and entertaining programs for schools, libraries, and conferences. Christopher received his formal art education at the Columbus College of Art & Design in Columbus, Ohio. His work has been selected for many exhibits and publications including the Society of Illustrators, the Mazza Collection at the university of Findlay, Ohio, and the Natural History magazine.

Currently Christopher is adapting and illustrating several of John Denver's songs as children's picture books. The critically acclaimed Sunshine On My Shoulders was released by Dawn Publications in 2003, Ancient Rhymes: A Dolphin Lullaby in 2004, and Take Me Home, Country Roads in September 2005.

Christopher Canyon shares some thoughts on the project: "To have this opportunity to share John Denver's music and message with the children of today is truly a dream. John gave the world so many thoughtful songs about relationships; our global need to live together in peace and the importance of caring for our environment. These messages, as relevant today as ever, and John's music and voice continue to touch our lives and lift our spirits."

Three of Christopher's books, Sunshine On My Shoulders, The Tree in the Ancient Forest and Stickeen, have won the American Bookseller Association's Benjamin Franklin Award for best children's picture book of the year. Chistopher is also the illustrator of Wonderful Nature, Wonderful You and the beautiful Earth trilogy, Earth and You - A Closer View: Nature's Features, Earth and Us - Continuous: Nature's Past & Future, and Earth and Me - Our Family Tree: Nature's Creatures. Christopher lives with his wife and cat in central Ohio.

Carol Malnor is the co-author of Dawn Publication's Teacher Guide Series. Carol has taught elementary through high school and co-directed the Education for Life Foundation. She works with her co-author husband, Bruce, as an educational consultant leading teacher training workshops.

It seems that Anisa Claire Hovemann has always been an artist. As a three year-old, she would form remarkably lifelike dinosaurs out of her colorful playdough. At the Waldorf elementary school she attended, her artistic tendencies fit naturally into the curriculum. She is graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art, with a degree in fine arts. She currently lives in Nevada City, California. Anisa has illustrated two books for Dawn Publications: Eliza and the Dragonfly (winner of the 2005 International Reading Association's Best Children's Book Award) and If You Give a T-Rex a Bone.
