About the Author

Africa is home to many severely needy and marginalized but enterprising individuals. These people subsist in low-income communities. They are affected by unfavorable economic policies, illiteracy and poor enterprise support infrastructure. Over the last decade the focus of many Micro, Small and Medium enterprises (MSMEs), has shifted from entrepreneurship to a proliferation of petty trading. In Ghana MSMEs employ between one to five people, accounting for almost 70% of the Ghanaian labor force. They operate in the areas farming, agri-businesses, light manufacturing, arts & crafts, textiles & garments, tourism, financial services, construction business & carpentry, to name but some. Given that large-scale economic growth and employment in Ghana were directly linked to these ventures, an assistance program seemed important. Association of African Entrepreneurs (AAE) supports sustainable development in businesses throughout Africa. The key focus is on advocacy, education, information and networking support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Tomorrow’s entrepreneurs are just as important as those currently in business. AAE is striving to provide education & training for young entrepreneurs. This initiative includes apprenticeships, self-study, coaching and mentoring. AAE trains current and future entrepreneurs to develop the skills needed to run successful small businesses. Africa for Business: Hopes and Mirages is an exploration of newly arising prospects and opportunities in African countries for SME entrepreneurs, the engagement of local entrepreneurs and the management of community resources. This give a picture of the current situation of African SMEs and explore the arising hopes and mirages of African entrepreneurs in the second decade of this millennium.
