The Cincinnati Bengals are a proud and storied franchise. Some of the NFL’s all-time best players—and all-time great teams—have donned the orange and black. Each season is precious to the fans, whether we won two games or twelve, because it reminds us of special memories: trips to the stadium with parents and children, watching on TV with neighbors and friends, shared camaraderie with strangers, and more.

Team reporter, podcaster, debut author, and lifelong Bengals fan James Rapien presents the perfect keepsake for Bengals sports fans. About the Author

James Rapien grew up in Saint Bernard, Ohio, and has followed the Cincinnati Bengals from a young age. His hometown is less than eight miles from the stadium. He watched every Bengals game, and he always dreamed of working in sports. The only books he read as a kid were about basketball, baseball, and football.

James earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and communications from the University of Cincinnati. He started his career as a radio producer at 700 WLW and 1530 WCKY. He has covered the Bengals in a variety of ways throughout the years. He’s currently on the AllBengals beat for Sports Illustrated. He also hosts the Locked on Bengals podcast and is the founder of Cincinnati Bengals Talk on YouTube.

James still hosts radio shows and makes frequent appearances on both WLW and WCKY. He’s also a regular contributor to Spectrum News. He loves a good trade rumor and uses copious amounts of hot sauce on his food. Cincinnati chili is his go-to meal, followed by gallons of mint chocolate chip ice cream for dessert. When he isn’t working or eating, he’s probably walking his dog or spending time with his wife and daughter.

2005
11–5 / First in AFC North

At last, the Bengals awoke from their playoff slumber in 2005. Carson Palmer established himself as one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks, and wide receiver Chad Johnson cemented his superstar status.

The Bengals finished 4–2 in the AFC North, winning their new division for the first time. They reached double-digit wins for the first time since 1988, and they had the makings of a Super Bowl contender. Up first, they hosted the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card Round.

Their Super Bowl dreams died on the Bengals’ second offensive play of the postseason. Palmer completed a 66-yard pass to Chris Henry, but Steelers defensive tackle Kimo von Oelhoffen ran into Palmer’s left knee after he made the throw. The star quarterback fell to the ground, writhing in pain. Palmer had suffered a torn left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL). The Steelers won the game, 31–17, and one of the most fun and exciting seasons in Bengals history came to an end.

Palmer’s injury remains one of the biggest “What Ifs?” in team history. Many believed Cincinnati had the talent to make a deep playoff run and perhaps even win Super Bowl XL. (The Steelers added insult to injury when they defeated the Seattle Seahawks, 21–10, for their fifth Super Bowl title.) Palmer threw a team-record 32 touchdowns and was selected to the Pro Bowl. Willie Anderson and Chad Johnson were both named first-team All-Pro. Johnson was undisputedly the biggest star on the team.

Rookie linebacker Odell Thurman proved to be another bright spot for the Bengals, tallying 105 tackles, five interceptions, and nine passes defended. Sadly, it was Thurman’s only season in the NFL due to off-the-field issues.
